There is a palette of color - and I call it color to distinguish it from black and white - color that is subdued...quiet color. Color that doesn't announce itself with intensity. Color that often forms the background. But even using the word color conjures something vivid...and what I am trying to describe is something much more elusive and changeable. There are subtle shifts of value but not intensity in this palette...beaches meeting winter oceans, trees through the veil of rain, the grey white of a sycamore tree. This weekend I saw Slum Dog Millionaire. The color I am thinking about could describe the slums in the film. Punctuate that muted palette with the vibrant hues of the fabric drying though out the slums, being washed in the brown water, and worn by the women. The colors all start to visually play and dance with one another. The quiet browns are enlivened by the vibrant cobalt blues and cinnabar greens. Cadmium red screams from the face of whitened raw umber prodded by viridian to dance just a bit faster. All of these hues interact in a balanced yet vibrant visual dance. This is my current goal with my paintings.
